Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was the main beneficiary. It was established by Bill Gates, Microsoft founder, and his wife Melinda. They focused on education and health in the world. Bill and Buffett have been close to each other since the early 1990s. The other organizations receiving donations included those run by Buffett's three children as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his wife who passed away, which was focused on women's reproductive rights and also funded college scholarship programs. In the year 2010, Buffett and Gates formulated the Giving Pledge. This pledge encouraged other wealthy people to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.
